What we do
We place a priority on assisting people in the community who lack opportunities to access learning, working in ways which build links between them and other members of the community. In particular we assist:
  • Non-English speaking migrants, refugees, temporary protection visa holders and asylum seekers and any other people who want or need to learn English and acquire basic literacy skills in English
  • People who are isolated and haven't the skills or opportunities to participate in social networks; older people; the unemployed; people on low-incomes
  • Students at risk of dropping out of school too early
  • People lacking opportunities to access new technology
  • People who need to develop new skills

Programs
Refugee Support Program
Our support services link new arrivals (refugees and TPV holders) to our community and services including health centres, schools, employment agencies and legal representation. We help overcome the barriers to learning by encouraging them to participate in our programs.

While refugees, Temporary Protection Visa holders and asylum seekers of all ages are the greatest beneficiaries, the whole community benefits in a number of ways. The program is designed to ensure that refugees develop the skills and connections they need to participate fully in the community.

The majority of Temporary Protection Visa holders come from Afghanistan, Iraq and Iran. The Atherton Gardens High-rise estate is now also housing newly arrived refugees from Sudan. Fitzroy Learning Network is actively working to assist their settlement.
Computer Clubhouse
After school the Network is transformed into the Fitzroy Computer Clubhouse by an influx of excited and chattering kids aged 8-16 who turn our computer lab into a "design studio" using professional, state of the art software. The program is facilitated by the Clubhouse coordinator and supported by volunteer mentors from the IT industry and IT tertiary courses. Our kids are in the top 5% of computer users in their age group. Many of our younger secondary school students are the best computer users in their school.
Adult Education Program
Our adult education program is adapted to meet the changing needs of our students. Our professional and experienced staff is supported by over 150 regular volunteers every week.

We provide a flexible learning environment for up to 150 students, from over 15 countries, aged from 17-70. These classes focus on life skills, knowledge of public transport, shopping and building networks and links into the community.

Sewing classes
Classes integrate English skills and provide a comfortable learning environment that allows the participants to explore their creative skills with fabrics and sewing.
Driving classes
Providing Information and practical skills to Refugees and newly arrived migrants in the area.

All the classes are supported by teams of volunteer mentors who assist the teachers deliver the program and allow students to practice their writing and conversational skills.

For people who are unable to attend classes because of childcare problems or for those who are doing more advanced certificates there are 50 "Home Tutors" who provide individual home support and mentoring with English and interpreting Australian systems like Centrelink and banking.
